Shapes And sizes

Though trauma plates come in many shapes and size the most common shapes are rectangle, rounded rectangle, and irregular hexagon.

In concealed vests (vests worn under a shirt), the trauma plates are most commonly 5″ × 8″ and in tactical vests, worn as outerwear, the trauma plates are most commonly 10″ × 12″. The thickness of the trauma plate depends on material and application but it always remains thinner than 1/2".

Materials Used In Making Trauma Pads:

Ceramic

Ceramic plates offer very high ballistic value and are harder as well, but are not very effective in reducing blunt trauma. Materials like aramid fabrics, high-density plastics, and metals are used to increase their effectiveness.

Metal

Mostly steel, titanium, and aluminum are used in making metal trauma pads.

Fabric

In soft trauma plates, layers of aramid fabrics, which are quite similar to the material found in the vest add to the stiffness and provide trauma protection.

Plastic

Multi-layered sheets are also used to provide an added lighter ballistic enhancement. These plastic sheets reduce the possible risk of fracture.

Trauma pad is necessary for the trauma vests because the hard plate can stop most calibers, but the padding reduces the force of kinetic energy which is the primary means of injuring someone through a bullet.
