Education is not the filling of a pot but the lighting of a fire

“Education is not the filling of a pot but the lighting of a fire.” - W.B. Yeats True in every sense, this statement of the world-famous poet brings out the real nature of education that we seek. It shouldn’t aim to fill our already-stuffed minds with new things but try to utilise the existing knowledge at its best to give us our true purpose in life. You cannot fill a cup of tea that’s already full. But you can always add some mint leaves and other herbs to make it taste even better. That’s exactly what education should do - improvise and innovate. Education is necessary to learn how the world works and how we can make the most of it. But aren’t we getting educated in every step of life? We learn to speak from our parents, to walk and to know our closest ones, our family, all before we go to school, right? So, what should education do to that knowledge, those experiences that we gain from life outside school? Well, if we define education in the way Yeats did, education should make use of all that knowledge, gather them, nurture it and light a fire with it. It’s like gathering all the scattered dry leaves on the lawn and use them to light a fire and warm oneself. For example, you have learned that your mother has given birth to you, fed you and brought you up. Education will help you realise these facts and instil respect for your mother in your heart. It will help you know what difficulties she went through, the amount of physical and mental pains she endured to give birth to you, protect you and keep you healthy. What else does education do to you? Let’s discuss in detail. Education connects you with your mind Are you sensitive, an egoist or highly emotional? You may be aware of your feelings, but education will help you recognise them and understand them to help you handle them carefully. You will know how to judge, criticise and praise yourself, and that will make you more human. Education will reduce negativity in your mind Do you know what the criminals feel when they kill someone? They probably feel nothing. Even if they may be educated, they may not have understood the real meaning of education, as they didn’t receive the right education in the first place. All of us have a negative side to our mind. But it’s education and knowledge that prevent us from succumbing to our negative feelings and doing something unforgivable. Education will give you a direction Once you can connect with yourself, you will realise what makes you happy. This, my friend, is the first step towards success. Not only will you create a list of goals in your life but also work towards meeting them. You will give your best to achieve what you want, and education will give you the initial push you need. Hence, education indeed is the fire that will keep you going forward. Are you ready to improve the taste of your tea with the herbs and mint leaves? Get educated in the truest sense of the term!
