To be specific, this is a huge deal for a lot of reasons: one, gamers won't have to rely on their own hardware to ensure they can manage the memory load of some of these online games. And two, servers will exist in the cloud thanks to Nvidia and SoftBank.
What Is Nvidia Exactly?
When you play a game on your PC and you marvel at the graphics, style and color, generally you're looking at Nvidia's handiwork. This is the company responsible for developing those nifty graphics chips installed in your computers, making it possible to play those sweet console-level games you love so much.
It turns out they'll be doing the exact same thing for data centers -- installing those same chips in servers for cloud games that will allow everyone to experience the exact same quality without worrying about your own hardware. Nvidia accomplished this through creation of what they call a "pod," a collection of their graphics cards with the ability to support as many as 10K gamers all at once, streaming from the cloud.
This is big news for the gaming industry as both mobile and cloud continue to grow in efficacy and availability, potentially forcing console gaming and CDs on a backburner and letting the Internet take over in a big way. Suddenly free-to-play games, MMOs and more might be the next kind of "Playstation console" or "Nintendo Switch" to the stars that gamers will want to have, capable of tapping into a wireless network and playing without even needing a download or CD to place.
Even Better, SoftBank and LG Uplus Would Use Those Same Cards on 5G
And just in case you live in the dark and never heard of 5G, READ THIS AND GET IN THE KNOW. This will change the way we play our video games for sure -- the way video games are sold and purchased, too. So stay tuned. Someday soon you might have a Playstation chip installed in your brain that will allow you to play 3D augmented reality while walking to your job.
Wouldn't that be cool?
