The Benefit of Drone Technology Couldn't Be More Important Given Climate Change

Water pollution, noise, ship collisions, fishing nuts...hunting. Let's add that to the plate of these gentle giants who are already stressing about habitat and food loss due to climate change. The biggest problem was the challenge in trying to pinpoint and collect the data we need to know in order to help our friendly beasts of the sea --

But with drones, it's now a possibility. Scientists simply need to pilot the drone you see in the video and time it right, collecting the "blows" exhaled from the lungs. With those kinds of samples, there's no doubt: scientists will have what they need in terms of information --

DNA, pregnancy hormones, stress hormones, other microbiomes: with all that information, we can tell if a whale's pregnant or sick. Even better is the ability to take photos of those leviathans of the deep, targeting the habitat in a much more refined manner. Cross-reference that with the data collected from the mucus of said whales, and you have superior accuracy.

With the help of artificial intelligence programs, the drone times it right to dip down just enough to catch the samples while shooting high-res video -- so not only do we have aerospace tech doing the job, but AI contributes as well (which isn't a surprise given the technological trend we're already seeing).

After all, ocean health is the barometer for understanding the health of our world -- and therefore, the health of humankind. Whales are at the top of the ocean's food chain, found everywhere -- which makes them quite the measuring stick. If whales are healthy, so are we.
