What is The Best Age to Start Child Care?

Parents are often left to discern when the best age is to send their children to childcare.

The things they should think about are whether their child possess or lacks certain qualities which can influence their decision to send their children to childcare at a certain age.

With differing views, it can be easy to get caught up in what some people think is right and what they think is wrong, which can leave parents more confused than ever.

The key is to know your child. You are the only one that knows your child best and be confident in your decision as to when you think it’s best for them to commence childcare.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when making the right decision concerning child care for your child:

Babies 0 - 18 months - At this age babies are completely dependant and thrive when they receive a lot of one to one interaction from a parent or caregiver. This is most commonly at home, however can be provided at childcare centres if there are a smaller number of babies per carer, to allow more one-to-one time.

Toddlers 18 months to 3 years - At this stage in your toddlers life, you’ll notice they are overly active and full of energy which means they need a safe space that allows them to explore their environment without the risk of injury. Child care facilities are perfect for toddlers who are beginning to explore their surroundings with plenty of staff to pay attention to their changing needs from day to day.

Preschoolers 3-5 years - Preschoolers are super inquisitive and ready to build peer relationships and engage in play-based learning with their friends. A good child care centre is important in helping children aged 3-5 years learn essential skills which will well equip them for school. Sending children to childcare as preschoolers, will also provide them with the child care facilities and opportunities to participate in a wide variety of activities they might not be able to do at home.

Child care facilities provided at centres can help you determine at what age you wish to send your baby, toddler or preschooler to childcare. Some things are better offered in centres as opposed to a home environment and vice versa. No two children are the same, so it is really up to you, the parent to decide when it’s best to send your child to childcare.
