After the French Revolution, it was democratized extensively, that lead to considerable damage to the forest ecosystem. It became mainly a leisure activity and now governed by strict laws to protect wildlife and its environment.

From necessity to a leisure activity:

A brief history of hunting, the first human beings lived a nomadic lifestyle and presented meat to their diet about 3 million years ago. They first consumed recently deceased animals and the larvae and insects found on carrion. Later, as they began to look for prey, they invented hunting techniques expending rudimentary weapons and stratagems.

Agriculture developed in the Neolithic era and livestock farming demoted hunting to a secondary role. It converted part of a defensive practice aimed at protecting farmers’ crops from animals that destroy them. However, hunting out of necessity quiet exists nowadays among some tribes in, like Thailand or Indonesia and Southern Africa. In this country, it pays for food shortages when farming conditions is difficult.

History of Hunting

The practice of hunting is codified during the Middle Ages. Being asked to hunt with the King were one of the court’s great honors. In Europe, laws were devised to regulate hunting on the royal territory. During this period, forest planning and the privileges granted for their use brought about a proliferation of animals that was harmful to the peasants’ crops. Hunting therefore aimed at eliminating such animals in order to keep the plantations. From the 13th century onwards, theoretical mechanism about wild animals, prey typology and hunting techniques throve, as did recipes for royal banquets. Post-hunt banquets was an opportunity to prove social relationships in court. An example of this were the saving of choice pieces for the guests of honor, thus highlighting the prowess of hunter and cook alike.

During this period, hunting is a privilege of nobility, and the right to practice it was directly linked to the right to land ownership. Poaching, that had stood relatively well tolerated until then, now severely punished and non-noble people are formally prohibited from hunting. According to the royal ordinance which came into force in March 1515, hunting were actually seen as a waste of time that should be spent on working the land.

To reserve wildlife, permits stood introduced under Napoleon I, placing limits on when and where hunting could take place. However, in the 19th century, this license cost a farm laborer the equivalent of one month’s pays, hence hunting developed once more the privilege of the well-off classes. This situation stimulated poaching, either for food or to sell commodities derivative from animals, such as fleece.

Nowadays, hunting are strictly regulated. To find a permit the applicant must sit an exam and trail other laws like those governing fire arms. Hunting are mainly become a leisure activity designed to regulate populations of game. For example In Switzerland, these is connected with the autumnal culinary tradition of ‘the hunt’ - although the meat also arises from livestock agricultural.
