My backbone is still nudging me when I recall that horrible day. We are a family of three. We were living our peaceful lives in Virginia. My wife is a cardiologist and I am a freelancer. Our thirteen months old baby boy stays with me at home the whole day.
Things were going as they should be. And then suddenly we had to plan a move. My wife has a job offer and the distance was too much for daily traveling. We often discussed that the house was too small for us so we should move to a new house but we never made any effort.
As my wife got notified about the job, it was time to move. We talked about it and we decided to hire a moving company. I made a list of renown movers in Virginia and requested estimates. It took me a week to finally get a booking.
The issue was we had only two weeks to complete the packing. As I already mentioned we had a baby so you could imagine the chaos. We barely managed to inform the utilities and pack our stuff. I will not go into the details of my incoherent attempts of packing.
The morning of the moving day was stressful. We couldn’t completely pack the things and even the packed boxes were not properly labeled. You must have recognized a lot of mistakes till this point but there is a huge one to come.
As my wife was handling my son, I was in a hurry of getting all the stuff ready for the move. I just threw in the remaining items in the boxes and put some poorly written labels on them.
There was a huge packed box ready in our kitchen. I bent down and got a firm grip on the box. As I lifted the box from the ground, something went wrong. I could handle the weight anymore and the box fell to the ground on my foot and I couldn’t breathe from pain in my spine. It was like sharp pain my originating from the sacral portion of my spine and it spread into my legs.
I called my wife for help. I was sweating badly and couldn't even tell her what had happened. She called 911 and the first respondents came for our help. The move was postponed due to my bad health. I had lifted the weight in the wrong way and a vertebrate disk was dislocated.
I had surgery a month ago and it has gotten much better but I have learned my lesson the hard way. I would highly suggest to all the people that carefully read safety protocols before you lift heavyweights.
Here is a simple tip that might prove helpful. Never bent down to lift the weight. Squat down, bend your knees instead of the backbone and gradually lift the heavy objects. No abrupt movements while you keep the weight at the level of your waistline. Never twist your back while you are carrying heavyweights.
