With the help of this technique, people can opt for the modification of the embryos to be implanted. “Genetic engineering makes it possible to activate certain genes and replace other,” says Dr Gautam Allahbadia , a Dubai-based IVF specialist.
“For example, the genes that could cause cancer or diabetes could be screened and replaced with other, healthy genes. Genetic engineering also allows people to choose genes that enhance physical build, eye colour, mental intelligence, hair colour and so on,” explains Dr Allahbadia, who leads the IVF team at this fertility clinic in dubai, Millennium Medical Center (MMC IVF).
Medical science has been taking rapid strides towards technological advancements. Apart from genetic engineering, techniques like embryoscope, micro-dissection TESE and ROSI also work towards better chances of healthy conceptions.
Embryoscope, also known as the time lapse system, is a revolutionary incubator with a built-in camera that takes periodical images of embryos as they grow. This technology ensures that only the best of embryos are selected to be transferred to the uterus.
The male reproductive ailments can also be treated better with advancements in assisted reproductive techniques. Micro-dissection TESE (MicroTESE) is an invasive procedure utilised to locate sperm in men having non-obstructive azoospermia or severe testicular failure.
According to Dr Gautam Allahbadia, MicroTESE is especially helpful in these men as there may be certain localised areas of sperm production that might have been missed during blind biopsies or needle aspiration procedures.
“The MicroTESE procedure involves surgically opening the testes and inspecting the tissue under a microscope. An intense search of every part of the testicle is performed to locate healthy areas that are more likely to contain sperm. Post MicroTESE, the sperm may be used in an ongoing IVF cycle, or be frozen for later use,” quips the Dubai-based IVF consultant.
Considering the rate of advancement in IVF treatments, the near future can even bear witness to artificial surrogates, where embryos could be carried to term inside incubators rather than mothers.
