History of Palmistry

A brief history of palmistry

By Janet Li

Many people in the western countries are passionate with palmistry. The palmistry books were also issued. In the western countries, the promotion of palmistry has the deep relationship with the palmistry business of the gypsies. People think that gypsies are originated from India. While arriving at Europe in around 14 to 15 century, the gypsies lived afloat at that time. The ladies of gypsies were familiar with divination. The occupation of them would be the divination. We can say that the palmistry knowledge of Europe was deeply affected by the palmistry tradition of the gypsies.

Coming from France in the 19th century, both Camimir d’ Arpentigny and Desbarolles are the noted person in the palmistry field. Their palmistry technique had made the basis for the palmistry study in the western countries. As the officer of French military, D’ Arpentigny analyzed the relationships between the character and occupation to divide the hands into seven categories. The study of Camimir d’ Arpentigny is still the traditional hand shape categorized method and is widely spread.

Looking to be a painter at the earliest, Desbarolles became the palmist finally. His writing has been widely spread. Employing the western mystery study in his knowledge, Desbarolles had concentrated on the classification of the palm and finger, the meaning of the palm line. He had found the basis of the more practical palmistry views.

In modern times, the palmistry study has bent both western and eastern palmistry theories and has been bent into the living of the people. The palmistry experts from both national and international countries have made the scientific assessment and get the following results: Being a study that accumulates the experience of body characteristic analysis, the palmistry study has the same position as that of the anatomy, genetics, and psychology. In China, there is a stream that bends the essence of both western and eastern palmistry study to form modern hand analysis. Having pluckily employed the knowledge of personality psychology, discovery psychology and pathology, it can make use of the characteristic of the hand to make the comprehensive calculation about the change of psychology, emotions, the health of the people. Combining the previous theoretical system of hand analysis study to reinforce its prediction function, the modern hand analysis also makes it be equipped with the practicality in the aspect of criminal investigation analysis, pathological analysis, and psychological analysis.

The modern hand analysis has introduced the theory of the “Yi Jing” to make the theory to be stricter and the judgment to be more accurate. It has pointed out that the hands are the convergence hub of the blood veins, nerves, muscle, and the bones. Although humans are also the animals, the difference between with the animals is the large portions of the brains of the humans are used to order the activities of the hands. Therefore, the hands can be used flexibly. The palm line and the color of the hands mostly have the change. It can be said that the hands of the humans are equal to “the brain that is shown outwards”. It is not only the parts of the limbs but also the representative organs of the human bodies. As the statement of the Buddhism: “Appearance comes from the heart.” The thought and the emotion of the humans can be reflected by the hands.
